F*ck Freud

Jul 23, 2023

You might have heard people say that the clitoris was only discovered in the 1990’s. In its entirety, as one complex and succulent orgasmic structure - YES!  By the wonderful Urologist Dr. Helen O’ Connell in Melbourne.

Going way back, however, in 1844, a medical researcher by the noble name of George Ludmi Cobalt created the most detailed at that time. He made diagrams of the clitoris - its spongy tissue, nerves and blood supply. But he hadn’t yet connected it all as one structure!

(This is an actual drawing from my dear friend Georgie LC)

Get this though. In the early 1900’s, Freud came along and dismissed clitoral orgasms as immature. And categorised vaginal orgasms as mature. 🙄

And hence the over-emphasis on penetrative penis-in-vagina sex. A patriarchal model.

I’ve noticed this bias in our everyday narrative. Having conversations with friends over a warm cuppa and they’ll say they haven’t had sex with a new partner yet…but actually their partner has already gone down on them.

This is sex. Oral sex IS sex!!!

Catch yourself on that one….have you relegated oral sex to just being foreplay with a partner? Or maybe a partner has said “we haven't had sex in ages” but you know for sure there's been some clitoral stimulation in the last 14 days!

🧑‍🏫 Back to our brief history lesson.

In 1948, the clitoris was actually removed from the medical reference book Gray’s Anatomy. Yep, the inspiration for the name of the hit TV show and about 2 billion George Clooney obsessions worldwide. Decades of lust for one man and that book didn’t even have a clitoris in it?!!

Later it got reinstated, but it only showed the tip. 🤦‍♀️

Then Helen O’ Connell came along with her MRI scans and living sexually aroused women. And we found out the full scale of the clitoris.

The glans of the clitoris and the hood - what we see and feel externally is just the tip of the iceberg. The clitoris extends deep into the pelvic bowl with a clitoral shaft, body, legs (crura) and bulbs, which straddle the walls of the vagina.

The clitoris is is highly innervated and made up of erectile tissue which engorges with stimulation. It's location and structure is leaning towards the theory that vaginal orgasms may be as a result of indirect stimulation of the clitoris.

Meaning this little organ is indeed the main event!

It's understood now through research that in the early stages of embryonic development - the male and female sex tissues are very similar. Differentiating into the penis in male-assigned bodies and the clitoris in female-assigned bodies after a few weeks.

The clitoris is the only organ that's main purpose is pleasure. Sadly, for many clitoris owners they've lost connection to this vital treasure. It has so much to offer in terms of pleasure and life force.

It's never too late to get to know your clitoris and develop its sensitivity, which incidentally doesn't require the most powerful vibrator out there.

Instead - caress, touch, smile to it, breathe into it, massage and melt into its magic.

If you do one thing today, stimulate your clit.

With heart,
